The Beginning
Over 3 years ago, I decided to start a business. Well.. actually that’s not entirely true. I have always been entrepreneurial at heart. Being a creative, independent type of woman with some A-type personality disorder sprinkled in with slight control issues, thinking about it now - entrepreneurialism is a perfect fit for me.
The thing is - I had always wanted to create something of my own. When I was younger, I could always see myself having my own thing. I would pretend that I was this successful business owner and I had all of these things to do and take care of. But, being 17 years old, even then I knew I was going to need money to fund it somehow. A few years later getting into college, stumbling around a bit, then taking a break from college for about 2 years and just working odd jobs here and there, I finally came across a job that would lead me to my professional career as a registered dental hygienist.
I never thought that I would ever get into a field like dentistry, but something in the back of my mind was curious about it and applied for a dental assisting job. I went in for the interview and spoke to the doctor for about 20 minutes and, with zero experience he finally asked me, “So what makes you think you’d be good for this job?”, and I responded, “I’m a hard worker and a fast learner and I can get the job done.” He hired me for $10.00 an hour, that was 20 years ago.
My new boss was really pleased with my performance and that the patients seemed really happy with me as well. In any case, I found dental hygiene with my work experience here. Fast forward to 3 years ago, October 2021 - and I accumulated a hell of a lot of experience through dentistry, caring for people, navigating through the changes in healthcare going from privately-owned offices to corporate-based dental offices and seeing the difference, insurance issues for both the patients and the providers - It was a lot. I am the type of person that I sit back and observe what’s going on around me. By nature, I am very observant and always aware of situations, people, whatever.
11 years ago, I made the move from New Jersey to Las Vegas because I simply wanted a change of scenery. I was 32 years old and felt like I needed a change, so I moved away from everyone I knew. When I moved to Vegas it was a change I certainly needed because I wanted to be able to get out of situations on my own. I wanted to be able to figure things out on my own. My family will always be there for me - but it was really important to me that I was able to figure out whatever situation I got into, on my own. I am definitely not the same person I was 11 years ago. I am proud of the woman I have become in my time in Vegas. Was it easy - fuck no. Was it worth it? A part of me feels almost exhausted thinking about everything that I have done and overcome - but a much bigger part of me feels so incredibly fucking proud.
I am giving you this extremely summarized background on myself because there’s a saying in the business/entrepreneurial world that says, you need to become a version of yourself in order to achieve your goals and dreams. That perhaps, you haven’t accomplished what you envision yet, or what your dream is, because you are still not yet that person.
Backing up a little bit and thinking about the person I was when I first moved to Vegas, then thinking back to the person I was just 3 years ago when I decided to go all-in on the business I saw myself building - I can tell you that this entrepreneurial journey that I have been on so far.. Even in my infancy.. Has changed the way I look at, perceive, interpret, and react to things. I feel that I am better for it.
They weren’t joking about how hard this journey is - but despite all of the blood, sweat, tears, time and money I have invested into my business, despite me cursing the Universe for putting this dream into my heart - I can honestly tell you I am in love with this journey. And I am happy to tell you my story, and what I’m building, what the process has been like for me - because I think a lot of startup entrepreneurs that get onto this journey, need to know that they are not alone in feeling the way they feel.
I have documented everything I have done for the last 3+ years because I know it’s all important. I also believe it’s important for people to understand the founders of these companies and businesses and why they decided to pursue this path. And boy oh boy - there is a lot to tell.
